The Big One: 12 Months

I have a one year old. A toddler. A mini-grown up. He walks, talks, and feeds himself with a spoon and he is no longer a baby. On one hand, it’s a ridiculously sad milestone, but the overpowering emotion I’ve been feeling with the passing of the first year of Harry is pride. This little boy is someone to be proud of.

This month Harry really started cruising around and is now completely comfortable walking on carpet, gravel, tile, in shoes, out of shoes, in socks, etc. He is decidedly a big boy now, and one of my favorite things is when he walks over to the bookshelf, picks out his favorite book (still Brown Bear or anything Baby Genius) and hands it to me. Also, boy can eat. He loves soup and he loves beans, so he loves bean soup. Really, he loves just about everything. Though not summer squash and/or zucchini.

Harry understands English and is working on his verbal. He pretty much always knows what I’m saying and he is getting so good at communicating back to me. He signs “please” all the time (cutest thing ever) and says “thank you.” He’s also working really hard to make “sh” or “ss” noises. It’s a lot of spitting. He blows kisses and plants ’em directly onto my lips, depending on how far away from me he is. And the kid hasn’t met a pile of pillows he hasn’t jumped into head first.

The last year has really, really been the best year. Welcoming this little boy and really getting to know him is amazing. Jon and I say it every day – but we really, really are the lucky ones. Harry, we love you so very much.

11 Months! What Child Is This?!

Monday, Harry celebrated his eleventh month. How are we already less than a month from the big first birthday? We treasure every single day with this kid, and really see how much of a true blessing he is. He is so much fun… very spirited, determined, stubborn, and energetic and I love every minute of it.

Harry can say many words and make many animal noises now, yet he prefers to call most things, animals, and people “Doggie.” He most definitely communicates now, and he knows exactly what he wants. He eats so well (three bowls of soup last night!) and then requests dessert, i.e. dates or blueberries. He is really able to let me know exactly what he wants and I love it.

Harry took his first steps this month! He will walk a few paces on his own, but likes the security of the couch or Mama’s hand. But hold his hand and watch him go. He had four more flights this month and did wonderfully. What he decided not to do wonderfully with was nighttime car rides – not a fan. He also ran his first race on Thanksgiving, along with having turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and cranberry relish for the first time.

I really, truly can’t believe how big this kid is. He’s imitating animal noises, he can tell you where the fan is in every room, he knows what I’m saying anytime I mention food, and he’s picking out his favorite books for me to read over and over again. I absolutely adore being his mama. He is the most fun I’ve ever had in my life.

10 Freaking Months

You guys. Over the weekend, Harry turned 10 months old. I’m kind of in awe of how fast this has gone by. I mean, they tell you “Don’t blink!” but really… I need to stop blinking.

Harry 10 months | R.Simple Life

Harry is a talker. A lot of what he says only makes sense to himself, but he talks nonetheless. He does say tree, that, thank you, drink, done, and his personal favorite – doggy. He is becoming more and more independent, picking out the books he’d like read while I’m making dinner and handing them to me. I even caught him reading to himself this weekend. He’s really great at playing (and getting in trouble) on his own.

The poor dude was pretty sick for a few days this week and it was the only thing that slowed him down. He’s still go, go, go from the moment he wakes up until he’s back to sleep, which I suppose makes sense considering he eats as much food as I do – and then nurses as well. He’s entered the hitting, pinching, biting phase, and we’re working on curbing that. He is, however, a fantastic sharer, always offering me a bite of his food.

Harry is so close to walking, but I have to run to keep up with his crawl when he’s going for something. He loves to be near me, hugging me when I’m on his level, but likes his independence at the same time. I know I say it every month, but it’s true. I love this kid more and more every day.

Equilibrium: 9 Months

Harry has officially lived on the outside just as long as he was cooking on the inside. Why is it that this half seemed to fly by much quicker? I don’t think that’s very fair.

Harry, 9 months old | R.Simple Life

Man on the move. There is no rest for the weary – or Harry – from the moment he gets up at 6AM until he is sleeping again. The kid is on a mission and that mission includes pulling everything off the shelves, walls, out of baskets, drawers, etc. Everything is fair game. He doesn’t like to sit still, which was very apparent at his doctor’s appointment this morning. It’s go, go, go, and the only time he is content to sit is when he is in the stroller. He loves the outdoors, this kid.

Harry, 9 months old | R.Simple Life

Harry now sleeps through the night (yay!) and is a champ about it. He is on a pretty regular sleeping, eating, pooping schedule now. He takes full advantage of those six teeth, eating almost as much as I do at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and then he drinks lots of milk in between. His favorite foods are beans, bananas, blueberries, and soda water (that’s a food, right?). His face lights up when I pour myself soda water, and he sweetly requests it using baby sign language. He says Mama, Papa, and Dat, which I’m pretty sure means “Bad Cat” as he gets very serious and repeats “Dat” anytime Calvin is in trouble.

Harry, 9 Months Old | R.Simple Life

Our sweet boy is a lover of books, dancing, and swinging, and determined and stubborn as ever. I swear, he’s going to change the world one day with his tenacity, so we’re working very hard to teach him to do good. Is it possible to love this kid anymore? Probably. But I can’t imagine it.

Eight is Great

Is it really already time for our next monthly installment of Harry? I can’t believe how fast this kid is growing. One more month and he hits equilibrium.

R.Simple Life | Harry, Eight Months

This month. Oh man. So much happened in one month. Harry went from scooting and rolling to crawling everywhere, and man is he fast. Cords are especially appealing so we’ve been doing lots of baby proofing. He learned to wave, clap, dance (!!), shake his head no, and he’s about this close to standing without holding on to anything. The poor guy was sick for the first time this month, but he handled it like a champ. He even slept an 11 hour stretch overnight once this month! (But don’t let that fool you, he still wakes up twice a night or more usually.)

R.Simple Life | Harry, 8 Months Old

Harry is a family boy. Nothing is better than being with Mama and Papa, especially when one of us is chasing after him. His feet kick like crazy. Harry also discovered a love for the swings this month. He kicks and laughs and then cries when we leave. His appetite is awesome – eating anything from steak to broccoli to croissants to soda water. And he even says “Mmmmm” when he eats something particularly good. He’s putting those three teeth to good use (and three more are threatening to pop through any day now).

R.Simple Life | Harry, 8 Months Old

We are so grateful for every single day we get with this guy. He’s a handful, but my hands have never been happier. Seeing the world through his curious eyes is one of the best gifts I could ever ask for. And the feeling I get when he hugs me is indescribable.

And Just Like That, He’s 7 Months Old.

It’s going too fast. You know when you’re a kid and you decide you’re brave enough to ride the big, fast roller coaster… and then it starts moving, and it’s going too fast and only speeding up and you can’t imagine what you got yourself into? Just wondering.

R.Simple Life | Harry's 7 Months Old

This month went by crazy fast. Maybe it’s because this dude is mobile now. He crawls when he wants to, but more often than not, he scoots. And he’s started pulling himself up. In his crib, on the windowsill, on Mama… anywhere he can get a good grasp. Curious as ever and just as determined, Harry is getting into everything (and we love it).

R.Simple Life | Harry is 7 Months Old

Harry said his first word this month (“Mama”) and is becoming very vocal, even singing along to the radio now. He learned to chose between two books, which means we read a lot of Brown Bear and Doggies. He also learned to flip the pages in the books, which is always done a little quicker than Mama can read. He no longer takes baths, preferring showers, and still loves everything about the pool.

R.Simple Life | Harry's 7 months old

I know I already said it, but this month just flew by. I love seeing the changes day to day, but man, kid, stop growing so quickly. On a side note, getting a picture of Harry this month was a bit of a task. Most of the shots on the bear are of his back as he was crawling away from me. And the shots in the chair were often interrupted by the photographer (me) running to make sure he didn’t topple off the chair. Too funny.

Happy Half Birthday Harry

Six months! How did this happen so quickly?! Yesterday marked a half of a year with this guy, and man it’s been the best six months of our lives.

R.Simple Life | Harry's Six Months Old

This month can only be described as fun. Harry has been rolling all over the place, and though he is this close to crawling, he has no issues getting to where he wants to be. And he knows where he wants to be. He knows what he wants and how to get it. His determination amazes me. Sitting on his own like a champ, this kid loves eating grown up food with his Mama  and Papa. He’s had everything from peppers to celery to apples to bananas to mango to sweet potato (and more!) all just with his set of gums. Though he did cut his first tooth on July 3!

six bears

Harry had his first vacation this month, and with it came his first (and second, third, and fourth) plane rides. He did great. He was running on empty when it came to rest, due to a nice long week of meeting lots of people, but this kid was a total peach. He even enjoyed an evening in while his Mama and Papa went out on a date. His first time with “babysitters” (my dad and stepmom). (Harry slept the whole time.)

R.Simple Life | Harry's Six Months Old

Every single day is a gift with this sweetie, who happens to give some amazing kisses (and is even starting to pull us in for them on his own). I really can’t believe it’s already been a whole half year, but goodness I can’t remember what life was like without him.
