Saturday Mornings

Saturday Morning in Ocean Springs, Mississippi | R.Simple Life

Saturday mornings might just be my favorite holiday. We wake up before the crack of dawn, thanks to our little alarm clock, and lounge in bed until the sun peeks above the horizon. After that, we all put on our running shoes and head over to the sleepy little town over the bridge from here (Ocean Springs, Mississippi). Harry bundles up in the stroller while Jon and I run a quick 5K over the Gulf of Mexico while taking in the sunrise and water views from our bridge. It’s a perfect time to talk about everything that doesn’t fall into the work category (which, unfortunately dictates a lot of our conversations lately). After our run we grab eggs and whatever veggies look good at the teeniest farmer’s market you’ve ever seen and walk over to our favorite pastry shop where we always get a spinach croissant or two.

What’s your typical Saturday morning look like?

Fall in Mississippi

Not bad Mississippi, not bad. I did just come from Michigan where Harry experienced his first snow, but I respect your effort. You’re definitely not failing Fall this year. Sure, it’s December, so the white I’m really hoping for is snow, but the fog will do nicely if snow isn’t on the agenda. I give you a B+.

For Trees

Thankful for Trees | R.Simple Life

Because you provide shade and warmth, fresh air and beauty, but most importantly, entertainment for my boy, today I’m thankful for you, trees. Last night, Harry and I were both feeling a little sad without Papa so I strapped the boy into the Moby and went out for a nighttime walk. It was dark and chilly and I had this sweet little dude talking to me, inches from my face. We stopped at every “Dee” along the way to feel it’s leaves. A 10 minute walk turned into a 50 minute adventure.

So thanks, trees. Or should I say “dees.”

The Perfect Morning

R.Simple Life | Mother of Boys

I’m really falling into this role of “Mum of a Boy.” I never thought I’d say it, but I get really excited to see dump trucks, the garbage man, airplanes, tug boats, sticks… Don’t get me wrong, I’m equally excited to see dogs, babies, kids, cats, and giant stuffed toys. But I’m really loving being a mum to this boy. The world through his eyes is pretty amazing.

Yesterday, we stopped on our morning walk to play with some sticks and touch a tree. We even brought a branch home. All while wearing jackets. It was perfect.

The Leaky Rubber Top to the Cup We Never Use

There are the motherhood milestones you expect. Things like waking up for the first time in months and realizing it’s light outside and your baby is still sleeping… or the first time your baby smiles at you… or the first time you get peed on. But then there are the motherhood milestones you never realized were milestones until you hit them. And then you think “I’m officially a mum.”

R.Simple Life | Motherhood Milestones You Never Considered

The other day we ran into one of the second kind. We were out for our run, had stopped at the park for a quick swing, and then ran home. When I put Harry back into the stroller at the park, I handed him the rubber top to his cup (he carries it around and holds it in his mouth like a stogie – it’s so funny). When we got home, it was gone.

Now, before I was a mother, I would have considered myself crazy for what I’m about to tell you. But now that I’m on the other side, I’m calling it a milestone and moving on. Harry isn’t particularly attached to this top (which, by the way, leaks like crazy, so we don’t even use as a cup). He sleeps just fine without it, he doesn’t need it to get a diaper change. But he really likes it. So after telling myself he’d be fine without it, then spending the afternoon thinking about that dang leaky rubber top, I decided instead of buying an entire new cup just for the top (why, yes, that did cross my mind), we’d just try to find it after his nap.

So we put on our rain coats and warm shoes, because yes, it was drizzling, and left the house to retrace our steps. I felt a little crazy, hawk-eyeing the ground looking for a rubber top, especially in the rain, but whatever. When we spotted it, we were both so excited – and it was all worth it. So instead of calling myself crazy, I’m just calling myself “Mum” today.

What is the crazy motherhood milestone that you never considered?

Harry In Stop Motion

Okay, in a year from now, after I have developed my new hobby of filmmaking to Spielberg status, I’ll probably look back at this little stop motion film, shot on my iPhone using the Gorillacam app, and scoff at my filmmaking. But today, it makes me happy as ever. For those of you who want a little peek into my nightly walk with Harry, here it is.

Seriously, I’m giddy about this. Not only because I figured out how to make a film in iMovie (yes, yes I did.) but because the stop motion and absolute crazy of this film is exactly how life feels right now. It’s a constant adventure with this kid, even if it is on fast forward and a little shaky. I love my life. And you just got a glimpse into my favorite hour of the day.

He’s a Swinging Machine

R.Simple Life | Harry on a Swing

I put him in the swing for the first time this week, and he is in love. Even going so far as waking me up at 5:30am so we can get some extra swing time in before Mama has to work.
