The Big One: 12 Months

I have a one year old. A toddler. A mini-grown up. He walks, talks, and feeds himself with a spoon and he is no longer a baby. On one hand, it’s a ridiculously sad milestone, but the overpowering emotion I’ve been feeling with the passing of the first year of Harry is pride. This little boy is someone to be proud of.

This month Harry really started cruising around and is now completely comfortable walking on carpet, gravel, tile, in shoes, out of shoes, in socks, etc. He is decidedly a big boy now, and one of my favorite things is when he walks over to the bookshelf, picks out his favorite book (still Brown Bear or anything Baby Genius) and hands it to me. Also, boy can eat. He loves soup and he loves beans, so he loves bean soup. Really, he loves just about everything. Though not summer squash and/or zucchini.

Harry understands English and is working on his verbal. He pretty much always knows what I’m saying and he is getting so good at communicating back to me. He signs “please” all the time (cutest thing ever) and says “thank you.” He’s also working really hard to make “sh” or “ss” noises. It’s a lot of spitting. He blows kisses and plants ’em directly onto my lips, depending on how far away from me he is. And the kid hasn’t met a pile of pillows he hasn’t jumped into head first.

The last year has really, really been the best year. Welcoming this little boy and really getting to know him is amazing. Jon and I say it every day – but we really, really are the lucky ones. Harry, we love you so very much.

Walking With Harry

Please excuse me while I post a shaky video of my baby in his diaper with my squeaky voice in the background, but my baby is walking. He took his first steps over a month ago, and would walk a couple of steps in between the couch and the chair, or if he was holding onto my hand, but over the weekend he took a couple of steps, and then a couple more, and bam. He’s a walker.

I have to say, Harry walking is my favorite. He’s getting better every day, but he still walks with his arms out in front of him, toddling from side to side, sometimes moving sideways instead of forward. It throws me for such a loop when he comes walking around the corner, or when I see him out of the corner of my eye running across the living room.

He’s so proud of himself, and rightfully so. Officially a toddler. Am I ready for that?

11 Months! What Child Is This?!

Monday, Harry celebrated his eleventh month. How are we already less than a month from the big first birthday? We treasure every single day with this kid, and really see how much of a true blessing he is. He is so much fun… very spirited, determined, stubborn, and energetic and I love every minute of it.

Harry can say many words and make many animal noises now, yet he prefers to call most things, animals, and people “Doggie.” He most definitely communicates now, and he knows exactly what he wants. He eats so well (three bowls of soup last night!) and then requests dessert, i.e. dates or blueberries. He is really able to let me know exactly what he wants and I love it.

Harry took his first steps this month! He will walk a few paces on his own, but likes the security of the couch or Mama’s hand. But hold his hand and watch him go. He had four more flights this month and did wonderfully. What he decided not to do wonderfully with was nighttime car rides – not a fan. He also ran his first race on Thanksgiving, along with having turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and cranberry relish for the first time.

I really, truly can’t believe how big this kid is. He’s imitating animal noises, he can tell you where the fan is in every room, he knows what I’m saying anytime I mention food, and he’s picking out his favorite books for me to read over and over again. I absolutely adore being his mama. He is the most fun I’ve ever had in my life.

The Leaky Rubber Top to the Cup We Never Use

There are the motherhood milestones you expect. Things like waking up for the first time in months and realizing it’s light outside and your baby is still sleeping… or the first time your baby smiles at you… or the first time you get peed on. But then there are the motherhood milestones you never realized were milestones until you hit them. And then you think “I’m officially a mum.”

R.Simple Life | Motherhood Milestones You Never Considered

The other day we ran into one of the second kind. We were out for our run, had stopped at the park for a quick swing, and then ran home. When I put Harry back into the stroller at the park, I handed him the rubber top to his cup (he carries it around and holds it in his mouth like a stogie – it’s so funny). When we got home, it was gone.

Now, before I was a mother, I would have considered myself crazy for what I’m about to tell you. But now that I’m on the other side, I’m calling it a milestone and moving on. Harry isn’t particularly attached to this top (which, by the way, leaks like crazy, so we don’t even use as a cup). He sleeps just fine without it, he doesn’t need it to get a diaper change. But he really likes it. So after telling myself he’d be fine without it, then spending the afternoon thinking about that dang leaky rubber top, I decided instead of buying an entire new cup just for the top (why, yes, that did cross my mind), we’d just try to find it after his nap.

So we put on our rain coats and warm shoes, because yes, it was drizzling, and left the house to retrace our steps. I felt a little crazy, hawk-eyeing the ground looking for a rubber top, especially in the rain, but whatever. When we spotted it, we were both so excited – and it was all worth it. So instead of calling myself crazy, I’m just calling myself “Mum” today.

What is the crazy motherhood milestone that you never considered?

Harry Sleeps All Night Long Now

Yep. He does. He’s been doing it for a month plus now, so I feel like I can say it without jinxing myself. And guess how we did it? Cried it out. (maybe both of us) Definitely torture for a night or two, but worth it. First of all, it’s really important for Harry’s development. Second of all, it’s really important for Mama’s sanity.

R.Simple Life | Sleep Training

I’m over at The Wise Baby talking all about it this morning. And I’m so well rested (well not really… but that’s not Harry’s fault. I was on the couch working and watching Gilmore Girls way too late last night.).

Now… how do I deal with Daylight Savings Time?

Eight is Great

Is it really already time for our next monthly installment of Harry? I can’t believe how fast this kid is growing. One more month and he hits equilibrium.

R.Simple Life | Harry, Eight Months

This month. Oh man. So much happened in one month. Harry went from scooting and rolling to crawling everywhere, and man is he fast. Cords are especially appealing so we’ve been doing lots of baby proofing. He learned to wave, clap, dance (!!), shake his head no, and he’s about this close to standing without holding on to anything. The poor guy was sick for the first time this month, but he handled it like a champ. He even slept an 11 hour stretch overnight once this month! (But don’t let that fool you, he still wakes up twice a night or more usually.)

R.Simple Life | Harry, 8 Months Old

Harry is a family boy. Nothing is better than being with Mama and Papa, especially when one of us is chasing after him. His feet kick like crazy. Harry also discovered a love for the swings this month. He kicks and laughs and then cries when we leave. His appetite is awesome – eating anything from steak to broccoli to croissants to soda water. And he even says “Mmmmm” when he eats something particularly good. He’s putting those three teeth to good use (and three more are threatening to pop through any day now).

R.Simple Life | Harry, 8 Months Old

We are so grateful for every single day we get with this guy. He’s a handful, but my hands have never been happier. Seeing the world through his curious eyes is one of the best gifts I could ever ask for. And the feeling I get when he hugs me is indescribable.

A Whole New World

R.Simple Life | A Whole New World

He moved three inches, stopped, smiled, and he hasn’t stopped moving yet. While he’d much prefer to walk, if no one is available to help him, Harry is a crawler. There is no place safe from his little baby hands, and boy do they get around. I think it’s time to babyproof. I will say this though… he’s a baby. He’s learning about the world around him. I am encouraging the heck out of his curiosity. I hope it is a trait he never loses, just learns to rein in at times. The people who make a difference in this world are often the most curious, right?

Side note, how perfect is this front page of the Ikea magazine for this post? I’d like to say Ikea and I worked on this together (but I’d be lying).
