Mini-Vacations to New Orleans Are The Best

If I’m being honest, last week kicked my butt. It was far too busy, and I felt like my whole life was way out of balance. It wasn’t a fun week. So to rectify that, Saturday morning Jon and I ignored all the work we had, left the house a little messier than I like it, and drove over to New Orleans for the day. It felt like a sunny vacation day, and it was exactly what I needed.

This was the first time we had done The French Quarter with Harry and boy is it different with a kid. It’s BUSY man. So we parked ourselves on the edge of Jackson Square eating beignets in the sunshine and Harry learned to dance to the second line street bands. It was one of those moments that are feeling far too rare lately that time stood still and I felt the sunshine on my face and heard my kid laughing and smelled my husbands hair in the breeze and that was it. There wasn’t anything else floating around in the back of my mind. My to do lists were long forgotten, and I was beyond happy.

Some days you just need a little vacation from it all, and when you get it, it’s good.

Audubon Zoo, New Orleans

Before there was the Denver Zoo, there was the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans. It was Harry’s first zoo visit and I couldn’t let it pass without a little recognition on the blog. Side note, check out that boy’s eyelashes.

As a family rule, we love the zoo. It’s the perfect way to spend a Saturday and it never gets old. But as I get on in age and wisdom, a part of me is sad at the zoo. I know they are for conservation. I know we’re working on breeding and increasing dying populations. But those cages get me. Which is why I love to see the peacocks.

The peacocks aren’t confined in a cage, though if they’d like to be, they just hop right in. We saw a whole herd of them hanging out with a little fox at the Denver Zoo. They had taken over this little guy’s cage and I don’t think he minded, having visitors. But usually, you see the peacocks walking around like all the humans. Perching in a tree for a birds eye view. Hanging out with all their animal friends on their own free will. I like to think of them as the little ambassadors of the zoo. Walking around from cage to cage, stopping to talk to each of the animals, bring them their daily dose of beauty. What do you think they’re talking about?

Anyway, in case you weren’t quite finished with the photo dump from Colorado, I figured I’d feed your addiction. The Audubon Zoo in New Orleans is quite nice. It’s big, it’s pretty, and there are so many beautiful exhibits. And of course, trees full of peacocks.

Denver Zoo for the Win

Here’s a little bit of Recor trivia for you… did you know that Jon and I are huge zoo nuts? We were card holding members to the Denver Zoo for all three of the years we lived in Colorado. We were in college and instead of staying out late partying Saturday night, we were waking up early Sunday morning to trek down to the zoo.

So it only made sense that we needed to take Harry there. To show him our old stomping grounds. To visit Dolly the elephant. To check out the new digs for Dolly. And to ride the carousel for the very first time. It was epic.

And thus concludes our Colorado Family Vacation Photo Dump. I’m sorry if that’s sad for you. If you find yourself having withdrawals, you can always keep up with us through my Instagram, but tomorrow we’ll be back to your regularly scheduled posting.

Once, in Breckenridge

A Few Days in BreckenridgeA Few Days in Breckenridge

Once, In Breckenridge | R.Simple LifeA Few Days in BreckenridgeA Few Days in BreckenridgeA Few Days in BreckenridgeA Few Days in BreckenridgeA Few Days in Breckenridge

I’m going to admit something I’m weirdly embarrassed about. I got altitude sickness. Me. The girl who lived in Colorado for 3 years, who raced to the top of a 14er with three boys huffing and puffing in her wake.  The girl who works out six days a week, has run marathons and squats in her garage. The girl who chases after a 14 month old boy all day long.

I got altitude sickness. We were at about 10,500 feet above sea level, so it wasn’t total unexpected for the girl who (also) lives at 14 feet above sea level, but still. The headache was non-stop… until we ventured down to Breckenridge. Then it was gone. Like magic. And I was sleepy, dude. I was tired and I had a headache. But I read BJ Novak’s book (love it). And I watched Catching Fire. And I snuggled two handsome boys for a really long time. And that’s why our time in the beautiful borrowed cabin in Fairplay, and our time running around Breck, was absolutely incredible.

And there you have it. Next week: Denver Zoo + Boulder. Get pumped.

Side note: That first picture of Jon and Harry is my favorite. Like, maybe ever.

Photo dump alert. Get ready for all sorts of pictures from our Colorado vacation. First on the list? An Eldorado Springs hike. Jon, Harry, and I joined my sister, my college roommate and her baby girl, Charlie. It was beautiful. Man, it made me miss those mountains though.

The hike was pretty flat, nice and easy for us flat-landers, but the views. Oh man. The views were unbelievable. I mean, you saw the pictures. Just imagine that times about a hundred.

Tune in tomorrow for scenes from our trip to Breckenridge and Fairplay, because you better believe I’m stretching this photo dump out. If you don’t care about our vacation… tune in sometime next week. Maybe I’ll be done with my love letter to Colorado by then.

Saturday Mornings

Saturday Morning in Ocean Springs, Mississippi | R.Simple Life

Saturday mornings might just be my favorite holiday. We wake up before the crack of dawn, thanks to our little alarm clock, and lounge in bed until the sun peeks above the horizon. After that, we all put on our running shoes and head over to the sleepy little town over the bridge from here (Ocean Springs, Mississippi). Harry bundles up in the stroller while Jon and I run a quick 5K over the Gulf of Mexico while taking in the sunrise and water views from our bridge. It’s a perfect time to talk about everything that doesn’t fall into the work category (which, unfortunately dictates a lot of our conversations lately). After our run we grab eggs and whatever veggies look good at the teeniest farmer’s market you’ve ever seen and walk over to our favorite pastry shop where we always get a spinach croissant or two.

What’s your typical Saturday morning look like?

For Jon

Last year, I took November to really delve into the parts of my life I am most thankful for. Sometimes we need a reminder that our lives pretty much rock. With the addition of Harry this year, it’s a lot easier to remember how awesome my life is, but I still really enjoy spending 30 days giving thanks for the people, places, things in my life that really make me happy. So we’re back at it this year.

Thankful for Papa | R.Simple Life

For Day 1, I really am just thankful for Jon. He’s my best friend and my confidant. He’s the best Papa a boy could ask for and is so good at holding my hand. He trusts my opinion and he works right alongside me. There is no one in this entire world I could spend the rest of my life with but him, and I’m so, so thankful for him (so is Harry).

So to you Jon. Today is your day. I love you man.

A Papa to be Proud Of

So, I’m not going to talk about the D-word on the blog. At least not right now. But I just have to say that I am so proud of my man. He works so hard serving his country. He plays hard too, but that’s why we love him. His never-ending supply of energy is wonderful when Harry needs to run around the house playing chase. His laugh is infectious, even when I’m having a not so wonderful day. He is so kind and generous. He’d literally give you the shirt off his back if you asked. Yes, you. Anyone. He wants to take care of everyone, and I’m so grateful that it’s Harry and I that get him all to ourselves.

R.Simple Life | A Papa to be Proud Of

Sometimes I think about how much I love him and I miss him. I miss him when he’s sleeping right next to me. I miss him when he’s singing in the shower. I miss him when he’s playing basketball or working or mowing the backyard. So missing him isn’t going to be new. The hard part will be not having his arms to pull me in and hold me close. His hand to hold. His shoulder to lean on.

And the even harder part will be watching my little boy, Jon in miniature, grow up and hit milestones by myself. Without Papa. Wishing for the end of this chapter so our little family can be whole again, but dreading every new day because it’s one more day Papa is going to miss. One more smile, tear, hug, high five. Our Papa gives up a whole lot to serve this country. And boy, are we proud of him.

We love you Papa.

xoxo, Mallory + Harry
