Mini-Vacations to New Orleans Are The Best

If I’m being honest, last week kicked my butt. It was far too busy, and I felt like my whole life was way out of balance. It wasn’t a fun week. So to rectify that, Saturday morning Jon and I ignored all the work we had, left the house a little messier than I like it, and drove over to New Orleans for the day. It felt like a sunny vacation day, and it was exactly what I needed.

This was the first time we had done The French Quarter with Harry and boy is it different with a kid. It’s BUSY man. So we parked ourselves on the edge of Jackson Square eating beignets in the sunshine and Harry learned to dance to the second line street bands. It was one of those moments that are feeling far too rare lately that time stood still and I felt the sunshine on my face and heard my kid laughing and smelled my husbands hair in the breeze and that was it. There wasn’t anything else floating around in the back of my mind. My to do lists were long forgotten, and I was beyond happy.

Some days you just need a little vacation from it all, and when you get it, it’s good.

Denver Zoo for the Win

Here’s a little bit of Recor trivia for you… did you know that Jon and I are huge zoo nuts? We were card holding members to the Denver Zoo for all three of the years we lived in Colorado. We were in college and instead of staying out late partying Saturday night, we were waking up early Sunday morning to trek down to the zoo.

So it only made sense that we needed to take Harry there. To show him our old stomping grounds. To visit Dolly the elephant. To check out the new digs for Dolly. And to ride the carousel for the very first time. It was epic.

And thus concludes our Colorado Family Vacation Photo Dump. I’m sorry if that’s sad for you. If you find yourself having withdrawals, you can always keep up with us through my Instagram, but tomorrow we’ll be back to your regularly scheduled posting.

Everyday We’re Boulder-in

Know this. Jon and I both with to Colorado State University. Which is in Fort Collins, CO. And even though we spent much of our Colorado vacation in Boulder, we’re still Rams through and through. But we did enjoy our time in Boulder, eating at our favorite restaurants, walking Pearl Street, looking at those beautiful mountains, and enjoying lots of snow.

Have you ever been?

Once, in Breckenridge

A Few Days in BreckenridgeA Few Days in Breckenridge

Once, In Breckenridge | R.Simple LifeA Few Days in BreckenridgeA Few Days in BreckenridgeA Few Days in BreckenridgeA Few Days in BreckenridgeA Few Days in Breckenridge

I’m going to admit something I’m weirdly embarrassed about. I got altitude sickness. Me. The girl who lived in Colorado for 3 years, who raced to the top of a 14er with three boys huffing and puffing in her wake.  The girl who works out six days a week, has run marathons and squats in her garage. The girl who chases after a 14 month old boy all day long.

I got altitude sickness. We were at about 10,500 feet above sea level, so it wasn’t total unexpected for the girl who (also) lives at 14 feet above sea level, but still. The headache was non-stop… until we ventured down to Breckenridge. Then it was gone. Like magic. And I was sleepy, dude. I was tired and I had a headache. But I read BJ Novak’s book (love it). And I watched Catching Fire. And I snuggled two handsome boys for a really long time. And that’s why our time in the beautiful borrowed cabin in Fairplay, and our time running around Breck, was absolutely incredible.

And there you have it. Next week: Denver Zoo + Boulder. Get pumped.

Side note: That first picture of Jon and Harry is my favorite. Like, maybe ever.

Photo dump alert. Get ready for all sorts of pictures from our Colorado vacation. First on the list? An Eldorado Springs hike. Jon, Harry, and I joined my sister, my college roommate and her baby girl, Charlie. It was beautiful. Man, it made me miss those mountains though.

The hike was pretty flat, nice and easy for us flat-landers, but the views. Oh man. The views were unbelievable. I mean, you saw the pictures. Just imagine that times about a hundred.

Tune in tomorrow for scenes from our trip to Breckenridge and Fairplay, because you better believe I’m stretching this photo dump out. If you don’t care about our vacation… tune in sometime next week. Maybe I’ll be done with my love letter to Colorado by then.

We Snuck Away

Harry Does Colorado | R.Simple Life

To Colorado. It was amazing and wonderful and cold and warm and beautiful and relaxing and fun. I’ll be back later this week with even more photos, but look how much this kid loved the mountains. Breaks my heart in the best, best way.

These are just a few of my favorite outtakes. Don’t be fooled by the last one, he has tears streaming down his face. I don’t think we’ve found the winner quite yet.

From Michigan

Growing up in Michigan | R.Simple Life

Have you ever noticed how many people are from Michigan? I have. No matter where you go you run into someone from the Mitten and I for one wear my Michigan pride front and center. It’s such a great place to be from. Beautiful, snowy, Midwestern winters with skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and coffee dates… warm summer nights filled with lakeside bonfires and fireflies… a million lakes to swim and boat and fish and ski on (take that Minnesota – a million lakes).

The great thing about being from Michigan though? Enjoying the best times of the year when you go back to visit. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to live in Michigan again. Maybe somewhere on the west side of the state? Or Up North? Or even just close to Ann Arbor (it’s such a great little town – have you ever been?). But staying away from the slushy gray end of February snow is great. And avoiding the mosquitos for all but one week of the summer is ideal. And perfecting your non-Michigan accent only to have every nasal-y “a” come right back to you the second you land at DTW is really kind of fun.

Have you ever been to Michigan? If not, you simply must go. Head up to Mackinac Island in the summer for a bike ride and taffy. Or swim in Lake Michigan and watch the sunset while wearing your favorite sweatshirt. Or visit Detroit and imagine how it used to be. Just go. It’s beautiful.
