Snapshots of the Weekend

This weekend pretty much sped by. Does anyone else feel like they need a day in between Saturday and Sunday? I would use it to clean and paint my toenails. What about you?

My mom came down this weekend for a visit. It included lots of cooking and cleaning (thanks mom!) and infinite amounts of reading, swinging, singing, and laughing with this kid. And maybe a few too many grandma snuggles when Harry just wanted to explore. But that’s what grandma’s are for, right? (At least, that’s what she’d tell you 😉

I threw a baby shower for a good friend of mine here this weekend (thus all the cooking and cleaning). But I was a really bad blogger and took zero pictures. I did remember to snap this one of my favorite baby shower game AFTER the party was over and I had already cleaned up the super pretty dessert table underneath. Whoops. I’ll work on being a better blogger.

And of course, there was a lot of time just spent with this kid. The best kind of time. In fact, he held me down and gave me kisses Sunday morning. I was in heaven.

How was your weekend?

A Big Boy

R.Simple Life | What is it about a baby sitting on his knees that makes him such a big boy?

What is it about a baby sitting on his knees that makes him feel like such a big kid?? Also, this big kid had his first time out yesterday. I plopped him on a chair, said “Harry, you’re in time out. You need to sit there and think about why you should listen to Mama.” And he folded his hands solemnly in his lap and thought about it.  I’m not kidding you. I had to turn around to hide my laughter.

Who Said I Love You First?

R.Simple Life | Who Said I Love You First?

Do you remember the first time you said “I love you” to you sweetheart? I’ve been watching The Office a little bit (okay, I’m flying through seasons in mere days) lately, and yesterday was the PDA episode where Michael and Holly first say “I love you” and then have to shake hands because of the office policy on PDA.

Side note, there comes a season where Jim & Pam becomes The Office for me. And I don’t love the change. Anyone else? Anyone? Am I crazy?

Anyway, I started thinking about the first time Jon and I said “I love you.” I said it first. But to hear the story, you first have to back up a few months to a different story.

We had been dating six weeks or so and went on our first vacation together… a road trip west. On the way home, we stopped at his cousin’s house in Omaha for the night, and Jon proceeded to get nice and drunk off the martinis his cousin made him at his restaurant. As I was driving him back from the restaurant, he said something, who knows what, and I responded “You’re right.” He told me I had better watch out, because if I said that too many times, he might just say three other words to me.

Fast forward a few months, and we were at his parents house watching a movie like young, dating kids do. We were joking around about one thing or another and J started laughing his amazing, authentic, signature laugh. I looked at him and decided I was sick of waiting for him to say it first (I had been waiting for a few weeks at least) and said “You are right.”

He was super confused and made me repeat it a few times before giving up on the meaning behind it. Well, needless to say I was a little mortified that I had gone that far as to hint to the L word, but not actually say it, so I hid shamefully upstairs. Eventually, he came up and we were watching our movie, and I had enough. I leaned in for a kiss, told him I loved him, and clenched my teeth waiting for a response. He kissed me. And then he told me he loved me too.

We say it all the time now. Sometimes it’s a quick “Love you” because we’re saying goodbye and sometimes it’s the kind of “I love you” that has to be said while looking each other straight in the eye and ignoring everything else. But it’s funny to think back at how nervous I was that first time.

Who said it first? I’d love to hear your “I love you” stories. Let’s get a little mushy.

PS I love you, J.

Through Harry’s Eyes

R.Simple Life | The way he looks at Papa

There is just something about the way he looks at us. Makes me try really hard to be the best human I can be.

Busy, Busy, Busy

I’m not going to lie. It’s pretty busy around these parts. There are very few moments where I can really sit down and do absolutely nothing. Wait – I’m sorry – did I say very few? I meant none. Silly me.

R. Simple Life | Busy, busy, busy

Case in point, it’s 9:30PM on a Sunday night and I’ve been sitting on the couch checking some emails, planning a baby shower, and ignoring the laundry that is in the dryer. In a minute, I’m going to grab a sports bra and some gym shorts (so I don’t have to come down here in the morning before I get dressed) and go upstairs to bed. I would have loved to have a few hours to spare tonight to watch a movie. Or even better, have the energy to watch a movie.

Tomorrow morning, at about 6AM, Harry will wake me up and it will be go, go, go until probably about 9:30PM. No stops, no breaks, no rest. But there will be one thing. The swings.

My kid loves the swings. He cries when we don’t stop to swing, he cries if I stop too early… but the pure glee on his face the second he realizes that we really are stopping for the swings is indescribable. The laughter and smile a million miles wide during that first push makes all the busy melt away. Harry on the swings is my own “stop and smell the roses.” He forces me to unwind, even if only for a few minutes. I focus on the color of the sky or the smell of the breeze or the way his hair flares out in the wind. I hear his laughter and I count to ten, over and over. In English, in Spanish, in French. I chase him and he giggles.

So while I wish I had a little more breathing room throughout the rest of the day, I’ll settle for our time on the swing. It’s pretty amazing for both of us.

And there you have it – a peek into R.Simple (Busy) Lives. Every night, swings for days.

I Swore I’d Never

There were a lot of things I swore I’d never do before I became a mum. I was so convinced I knew it all. Well, here I am to eat my own words. Luckily, I’ve got a big jar of peanut butter to help them taste just a little better.

R.Simple Life | Things I Swore I'd Never Do (as a mother)

I swore I’d never…

…call the toilet and/or bathroom the potty. But I did.
…let my kid sleep in my bed. But I love it.
…give into a whine instead of a request. But I did it without even realizing.
…let my kid wear clothes that had poop/puke/pee on them. But check, check, and check.
not leave my kid with a babysitter. But… still haven’t.
…consider not going on vacation with my kid. But I have no clue how I’d leave him.
…forget to shower. But there have been a few smelly days.
…let my laundry pile up. But I’m sitting next to a mountain now.

I have, however, refrained from using the double poo or double pee’s. Just goes to show, no matter how much you feel like you’ve got it all figured out, there’s nothing like a baby to teach you how much you don’t know. What did you swear you’d never do?

Things I Never Want to Forget

R.Simple Life | Things I Never Want to Forget

+ You learned baby sign language for “milk” which we use for any drink. But you use it whenever you want something.

+ The urgency in which you sign “milk” with both hands when we get close to the swings.

+ How sad you get if we don’t stop at the swings.

+ The serious face you make when we watch videos of Papa.

+ The way your face lights up when we FaceTime with Papa.

+ The midnight feedings. They’re pretty much over now, and I miss them. Just you and me, awake and cuddled up for those few minutes. I kind of miss them.

+ How quick your crawl is.

+ Your extreme fascination with the guitar. And the way you think I can actually play it.

+ Those two bottom teeth and a row of gums.

+ Splashing in the bath tub.

+ Your wave. And your clap.

+ The hugs I get when I pick you up out of your crib after a nap.

+ How squirmy you are when you’re getting a diaper change, unless I give you the sunscreen. Then you hold on to that like it’s your job.

+ The extreme cuddling with Bête, and how his face is always wet from kisses.

+ How much you hate to have your teeth brushed, but love to do it yourself.

xoxo Mama
